From superhero fantasies like Wonder Woman to historical dramas like Killing Margret, 2017 has surely proven to be one of the biggest and most successful years for women in Hollywood with 20 women-centric films being released. These movies are centered on strong female protagonist’s, which holds powerful stories of empowerment and courage.
Interestingly enough, for only the third time ever, three films with a female lead or co-lead (Hidden Figures, Arrival, and La La Land) were featured among those nominated for 2017 Best Picture award at the Oscars. Besides La La Land locked in the award for Best Picture, reinforcing an important message: The best movie of the year doesn’t always have to be centered on a male protagonist.

Released on June 2, 2017, Wonder Women was indeed the most highly anticipated film of 2017. The fantasy adventure was based on the iconic female superhero Wonder Woman. The beautiful actress that scored the lead role was the in-demand Israeli actress Gal Gadot who portrayed the Amazonian princess who sets out to explore the world, becoming one of the universe’s greatest heroes in the process.
Charlize Theron plays secret agent Lorraine Broughton in the intense action film. This role has surely been the action lead-role of her career. The skilled agent goes on a deadly mission in Berlin in 1989. It’s an ass-kicking spree that sees her dispatch dozens of bad guys with kicks, punches, a length of hosepipe and her own high-heeled shoe.
This amazing drama film explores the real, controversial romance between King Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo) and Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white Englishwoman. Directed by Amma Asante, the film uses a little-known historical chapter of England’s race relations as a metaphor to discuss prevalent issues like xenophobia, racism, and ignorance.
The Zookeeper’s Wife
This World War II drama film is based on the men at the heart of the conflict, but “The Zookeeper’s Wife” is set to change that. The film stars Jessica Chastain as Antonia Żabińska, who along with her husband, saved the lives of almost 300 Jewish citizens in Nazi-occupied Poland.
Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence takes on the challenging and provocative role of a Russian intelligence officer, tasked with seducing a CIA agent (Joel Edgerton) who handles penetration of sensitive Russian intelligence. The lives of the two officers and others are ultimately at stake in this tale of deception and forbidden passion, premiering November 10, 2017.
