Perhaps, the concept of “making a statement” in terms of style which can be credited to the ubiquity of constantly transforming your stylistic affiliations while staying true to your personal style. Hmmm… let’s see what its really about!
Vogue – Being well-dressed is a discipline. It’s a talent. It’s a lifelong learning curve
The perfect era that makes me think of statement dressing will probably be the 80s. The popular fashion clichés such as power shoulders, Paloma Picasso jewellery, and bright electric colours contribute to the concept of making a strong statement in fashion.
Fast-forward a couple of decades and dressing ‘down’ became the way of life for most of us. For years style consisted of understated everything in hues of black and grey. That was until many designers adding signature pieces to their fashion collections several seasons back, aka the phenomenon that caused a print and colour tsunami to hit shop floors on a global scale thanks to Peter Pilotto, Mary Katrantzou, Erdem et al.
Besides that, fashion blogging/vlogging contributed largely to ‘Statement Dressing’ when they arrived on the show scene. One minute fashion week was a sea of black, the next vibrant hues and pattern pieces descended upon us. Blogger style has become our masterclass in ‘Statement Dressing’.
